People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd – review.

People like Emmy Jackson. They always have. Especially online, where she is Instagram sensation Mamabare, famous for telling the unvarnished truth about modern parenthood.

But Emmy isn’t as honest as she’d like the fans to believe. She may think she has her followers fooled, but someone out there knows the truth and plans to make her pay . . .

A deliciously dark, page-turning thriller full of unguessable twists and turns.

About the author

Ellery Lloyd is the pseudonym for London-based husband-and-wife writing team Collette Lyons and Paul Vlitos.

Collette is a journalist and editor, the former content director of Elle (UK) and editorial director at Soho House. She has written for The Guardian, The Telegraph, and the Sunday Times.

Paul is the author of two previous novels, Welcome to the Working Week and Every Day is Like Sunday. He is the program director for English Literature with Creative Writing at the University of Surrey.

My thoughts

What an insight this book is into the world of being an influencer on Instagram! At a time when we all share our lives, our children, our pets and our homes, this book is a warning to hold some of that information back.

Everyone on social media is perfect or at the very least, their imperfections are carefully constructed. The influencer is likeable and relatable. It’s all a facade; one designed for huge financial gain. I loved how this story fully delved into that world and it’s pressures. It throws up the debate of how much is too much to share online. And, what you do share? How much of it can be used against you or to infiltrate your personal life? Who’s watching and how dangerous are they?

‘People Like Her’ is an utterly terrifying read told from the perspectives of an influencer and her husband. It’s a book that sends shivers down your spine and sprinkles a sense of dread on every page. It’s a truly compelling psychological thriller and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it.
