Friend Request by Laura Marshall – review.

Maria Weston wants to be friends with me

Maybe that had been the problem all along: Maria Weston had wanted to be friends with me, but I let her down.

She’s been hovering at the edge of my consciousness for all of my adult life, although I’ve been good at keeping her out, just a blurred shadow in the corner of my eye, almost but not quite out of sight.

Maria Weston wants to be friends.

But Maria Weston has been dead for more than twenty-five years.

My thoughts

What a fantastic read and that notion, the one where the past can feel like itโ€™s literally coming back to slap a person in the face – eek!

So many relevant themes came into play with this book. Our use of and obsession with social media; the trying to bury a past that constantly claws its way out of the grave.

I really enjoyed the main characterโ€™s POV. Being a single parent, trying to work hard and get on in life after a marriage split seemed dramatic enough, without her past surfacing in such a disturbing way. She is both flawed, yet likeable as an adult and I loved the way she investigated what was happening. It hits home that people make mistakes in life and how that can define a person forever.

All in all, a fantastic and gripping psychological thriller that Iโ€™d definitely recommend. Loved it!

Thanks for reading!
