The Secret of Cold Hill by Peter James – review.

Description

From the number one bestselling author, Peter James, comes The Secret of Cold Hill. The spine-chilling follow-up to The House on Cold Hill. Now a smash-hit stage play.

Cold Hill House has been razed to the ground by fire, replaced with a development of ultra-modern homes. Gone with the flames are the violent memories of the house’s history, and a new era has begun.

Although much of Cold Hill Park is still a construction site, the first two families move into their new houses. For Jason and Emily Danes, this is their forever home, and for Maurice and Claudette Penze-Weedell, it’s the perfect place to live out retirement. Despite the ever present rumble of cement mixers and diggers, Cold Hill Park appears to be the ideal place to live. But looks are deceptive and it’s only a matter of days before both couples start to feel they are not alone in their new homes.

There is one thing that never appears in the estate agent brochures: nobody has ever survived beyond forty in Cold Hill House and no one has ever truly left . . .

My thoughts

Ooh, I loved this spooky book! It’s totally eerie and will have the hairs on the back of your neck prickling as you read it.

I really enjoyed how well developed the characters were. Jason and Emily were the perfect newbies to the estate, bringing with them art and excitement. Maurice and Claudette had been living there a while longer and were such apt secondary characters. Although I was mostly creeped out while reading this book, Maurice and Claudette provided a bit of light humour. I actually found my self tittering on a few occasions at their antics and conversations. I’m just going to say donkey clocks and Quality Street, and I’ll leave it there. They were a genius stroke.

As for the haunting, I’d recommend not doing what I did which was reading my Kindle in the dark. Although, if you like the full works when it comes to atmosphere, then maybe I would recommend it. Actually, read it in the dark, enjoy all it has to offer. This is something I do a lot when I read supernatural books.

The mystery and history elements to the story had depth and were filled with intrigue. As for the village of Cold Hill, I think I’d give it a miss if it was a real place. Too scary – hehe.

To sum up, if you want a supernatural read full of ghostly goings on that will have you checking over your shoulder and flinching at bumps in the night, then ‘The Secret of Cold Hill’ is your book. Frightening, fun and fabulous!
