My Husband’s Girlfriend by Sheryl Browne – review.

Publication date: 7th April, 2021.

‘This is our little secret. You must not tell anyone.’

When four-year-old Ollie comes back from his first sleepover with his dad and his new girlfriend, Laura, his mother Sarah senses a change in her son’s behaviour. Something happened last night. Something he won’t tell her about.

Tucking Ollie into bed, she notices his beloved teddy bear, which she bought him when he was born, is missing and in its place is a new toy given to him by Laura. When she asks Ollie about it, he begins to shift uncomfortably, before whispering ‘Laura told me a big secret and she said I can never tell you.’

Sarah’s heart sinks. But when she raises her concerns, nobody wants to listen. To everyone else, Laura is the perfect stepmother and Sarah is just the jealous ex-wife.

Soon Ollie is asking to spend more time with his dad and Laura, and shrinking away from Sarah. Then, when she calls to him in the garden one day, Ollie doesn’t answer back. The garden is silent. Ollie’s sandpit is empty. Ollie has disappeared.

If you love a book that keeps twisting and turning, then you’ll love My Husband’s Girlfriend – it’s guaranteed to keep you up all night. Perfect for fans of Claire McGowan, Shalini Boland and Lisa Jewell.

My thoughts

What a whirlwind of emotion this book was! I totally got Sarah’s concerns and loved her chapters. I felt her apprehension as she’d hand her little boy over to her ex husband and his new partner, Laura. As the concerns about her piled up, the intensity of the story increased to breathtaking heights. The complexity of the problems really wove around intricately, taking me on a journey.

Revelations escaped at just the right time, keeping me glued to the pages and dying to know what would happen next. Oh, and ‘this is our little secret…’ – that line is immensely creepy when children are involved.

I found Laura to be a more complicated character which is what made her so intriguing. I also loved how things twisted and turned. One minute I was convinced that I knew what was happening then something would challenge that thought.

The ending was a whopper and definitely jaw dropping. This psychological thriller had me totally gripped throughout and I read it it in two sittings. It’s a fast read so buckle up. If it’s speedy, breathtaking and twisty you’re after, ‘My Husband’s Girlfriend’ is your book!

Thanks for reading!
