The Orphanage (2007)

Description.

A woman brings her family back to her childhood home, which used to be an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend.

Why I love this film.

It’s no secret that I absolutely love Del Toro’s work. Other works of his include Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone. The Orphanage is creepy, yet beautiful and I have a love of this film that has lasted over the years. If you want the hairs on the back of your neck to stand, then this is your film.

The Perfection (2018)

Description.

When troubled musical prodigy Charlotte seeks out Elizabeth, the new star pupil of her former school, the encounter sends both musicians down a sinister path with shocking consequences.

Why I love this film.

This has the best midpoint I think I’ve ever seen in a film. It’s more psychological horror than classic horror. It almost floored me. The performances are stunning and the content… hmm… I’d advise you not to eat while watching this film. It will however give you so much to think about for long after. I also watched it on Netflix so it’s easy to find.

Antichrist (2009)

Description.

A grieving couple retreat to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.

Why I love this film.

You have to enter the disturbing world of Lars Von Trier’s mind in this brilliant movie. It’s hugely symbolic, so if you’re looking for a film to analyse as well as be entertained by, this is it. It’s deeply tragic and incredibly disturbing, yet it’s so beautifully filmed. It’ s a work of moving art.

Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg pull out the best performances ever and really dig deep in conveying the emotional issues in the story. Don’t be fooled by its beauty and creepiness, there are some disturbing scenes involving genitals. In my opinion, it’s a must watch for any horror fan who is looking for depth. This certainly digs deep.

The Haunting (1963)

Description.

Hill House has stood for about 90 years and appears haunted: its inhabitants have always met strange, tragic ends. Now Dr. John Markway has assembled a team of people who he thinks will prove whether or not the house is haunted.

Why I love this film.

Based on Shirley Jackson’s book of the same name, this is an atmospheric masterpiece that has throughout the decades been a creepy favourite. I can watch this haunted house film with its psychological thrills, over and over again. It will have you hiding behind your hands. Being in black and white simply adds to the feel of the piece. Love it!

The Changeling (1980)

Description.

After the death of his wife and daughter in a car crash, a music professor staying at an old mansion is dragged into a decades-old murder of a child by an inexplicable presence in the mansion’s attic.

Why I love this film.

This is my ultimate favourite haunted house film. It’s creepy, jumpy, tragic and deeply emotive. The opening is simply heart-pounding and it contains everything that would make the perfect Halloween watch. I can watch this film over and over again and still be as creeped out by it. It’s also not gory so definitely have your popcorn on your lap. Hmm, maybe not. You’ll be able to eat it but the jumpy scenes may have you accidentally spilling it everywhere.
