The Regret by Dan Malakin – review.

Description

Rachel Stone’s world was destroyed by a stalker, Alan Griffin. After he went to prison, she rebuilt her life.

Now she has a three-year-old daughter and is in a new relationship. But someone is stalking her again. Her phone, her emails and her social media are hacked.

Rachel believes it’s Griffin, out of prison and looking for revenge. She needs to find him and make him leave her alone. But as Rachel is drawn into a hunt, she realises that something even more horrific is happening – something that will make her confront the childhood that has lingered like a ghost, and will force her to face the truth about her new life.

Is Griffin the one ruining her life? Or is someone else, someone far more dangerous, responsible?

My thoughts

Ooh, I loved the cyber stalking element of this book. It’s unlike any other psychological thriller I’ve read before. The stalker chapters really built the intrigue and knowing that the person behind it all was so technologically clever made me wonder if the poor main character, Rachel, even stood a chance.

I really felt for Rachel; mother, nurse – working hard to simply keep everything together while battling the darkness of an eating disorder that remains in her every thought. Her descent was skilfully written and totally believable.

Really, this book gave me the chills! Not a lot gives me the chills. And the denouement, I won’t spoil that for you. Whoa! I’m still in recovery. (Fans self and checks that my computer doesn’t look like it’s running any dodgy malware. Checks door is locked. Phew – all okay. Safe – for now). 😱
